How to Use TikTok Less (Without Deleting It)

Use TikTok less without deleting it: set a screen time limit, reset or tame your For You page, and close the back door. A three-level guide.

Deleting TikTok feels drastic, because your friends and messages are there too. You don't have to choose between all or nothing, and you're not alone: in a survey published in December 2025, 42% of weekly US TikTok users said they spend too much time on it (Edison Research). This guide gives you three levels: TikTok's own time limit, a calmer feed and closing the back door.

Updated October 2026. TikTok's menu names vary by country and app version. If something is labeled differently, use the search bar in Settings.

Key takeaways

  • TikTok has a built-in daily limit under Settings and privacy, but it's easy to skip.
  • You can refresh your For You page, turn topics down and, in the EU, switch off personalization entirely.
  • In one study, a less personalized feed went along with opening TikTok less often and for shorter stretches.
  • What works best is a stack: a limit, a calmer feed and a boundary outside TikTok.

Why TikTok is so hard to put down

The For You page never ends, and every swipe teaches it more about you. That personalization matters: in a University of Amsterdam study, 88 participants who used TikTok with a less personalized feed opened it less often, used it for shorter periods and felt more in control, though they also enjoyed it less (Dekker, Baumgartner & Sumter, 2025).

Regulators are paying attention too. In February 2026 the European Commission preliminarily found that TikTok's design, including infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications and its highly personalized recommender system, breaches the EU's Digital Services Act. It also said TikTok's time management tools are easy to dismiss and add little friction (European Commission). The findings aren't final and TikTok rejects them. The takeaway for you: if stopping is hard, it's not just about willpower.

Level 1: Use TikTok's own time limits

Set a daily screen time limit

Go to your profile, tap the menu (three lines) in the top-right corner and open Settings and privacy. Under Screen time, which newer versions group under Time and well-being, tap Daily screen time.

Pick a preset such as 40 minutes or 1 hour, or set your own, either the same every day or different per weekday. When you reach it, TikTok shows a notice, and depending on your settings you need to enter a passcode to keep watching. The catch: you chose that passcode yourself, so it only works as a barrier if you don't know it by heart.

Breaks and sleep reminders

The same area has screen time break reminders after a set stretch of continuous use, plus reminders for the evening. Since late 2025 TikTok also has a dedicated Time and Well-being space with missions and a badge for sticking to your daily limit (TikTok Newsroom).

Level 2: Tame your For You page

Less time is one half. The other half is what's waiting for you during that time. A feed that grips you less makes stopping easier.

Manage topics

Under Settings and privacy, Content preferences, you'll find Manage topics. Sliders let you set how often topics like sports, travel or creative arts show up in For You. Topics don't disappear entirely, and changes take a while to settle in (TechCrunch).

Refresh your For You feed

Also under Content preferences, Refresh your For You feed wipes what TikTok has learned about your taste and starts over as if your account were new. It helps when the feed has pulled you into a corner that only winds you up. You can't undo it (Tom's Guide).

Switch off personalization (EU only)

Because of the Digital Services Act, users in the EU can turn off personalization. For You and LIVE then show popular videos from where you live and around the world instead of videos picked for you, and the feeds of accounts you follow run in chronological order (TikTok Newsroom, 2023). For many people this is the strongest lever TikTok offers: the feed gets noticeably more boring, which is exactly the point. The option exists because of EU law, so you may not see it outside the EU.

Mark videos as Not interested

Press and hold a video you don't want and choose Not interested. It's tedious, but it works against the specific topics that keep you hooked.

Level 3: Close the back door

In-app limits share one weakness: the app decides how easy they are to skip. These steps sit outside TikTok:

  1. Turn off notifications: In iPhone Settings, go to Notifications, TikTok, and switch off Allow Notifications. Every notification is an invitation back.
  2. Get it off your Home Screen: Press and hold the icon, tap Remove App, then Remove from Home Screen. It stays in your App Library, just out of sight.
  3. Lock TikTok with Screen Time: Give TikTok a daily time budget with a passcode you don't know. Our guide on how to set app limits on iPhone covers the new iOS 27 menus.

If you want to keep TikTok for friends and messages but lose the endless feed, Feedbye is one option. Our iPhone app lets you use TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Threads, X and Facebook without the endless feeds: For You, Reels and Shorts are hidden, while friends and messages stay. Each app gets a daily limit of feed posts, say 10, and then the feed is done for the day, with three exceptions a day. You can block the original app with Apple's Screen Time, and Post Mode opens it for a few minutes when you want to post. Feedbye is independent and not affiliated with TikTok or ByteDance.

FAQ

How do I set a screen time limit on TikTok?

Go to your profile, tap the menu in the top-right corner and open Settings and privacy. Under Screen time, tap Daily screen time and set a limit, either the same every day or different for each day of the week.

Can you turn off the For You page on TikTok?

Not completely. You can refresh it, turn topics down with Manage topics and, in the EU, switch off personalization so you see popular videos instead of ones picked for you.

What happens when I refresh my For You feed?

TikTok forgets what it learned about your taste and recommends videos as if your account were new. The accounts you follow stay. You can't undo it.

Is TikTok's screen time limit enough on its own?

For many people it isn't, because it's easy to skip. In 2026 the European Commission preliminarily criticized TikTok's time tools as easy to dismiss. A limit works better combined with a calmer feed and a block outside the app.

Is Feedbye connected to TikTok?

No. Feedbye is an independent iPhone app and is not affiliated with TikTok or ByteDance.
